Rubbish & recycling
Rubbish Collection Days: Check your street schedule on the TCDC website to make sure your bins are out on time.
Recycling: Soft plastics (like bread bags, chip packets, and shrink wrap) can’t go in your curbside bin. Bring them into Discover Whangamatā for responsible recycling.
General Recycling: Cardboard, paper, tins, and clean plastics go in your kerbside recycling bin.
Recycle & reuse
The Whangamatā Resource Recovery Trust (WRRT) is on a mission to develop a reuse, repurpose, and recycle centre in Whangamatā, working alongside Coromandel centres, community groups, and the people of Whangamatā.
WRRT Collection at the Sunday Market:
Bring your items for responsible recycling and reuse, including:
E-waste (old electronics)
Plastic bottle lids
Batteries
Liquid paperboard containers (like cartons)
Clean polystyrene
Your contributions help reduce landfill, support community projects, and promote sustainable living.
Dog walking on the beach
Exercising dogs on the beach can be hugely rewarding for both owner and dog! Make sure you walk your dog according to local conditions.
Seasonal Restrictions: During the peak period—from 20 December to 31 January and all holiday weekends—dogs are only allowed on the main Whangamatā beach before 9am or after 6pm.
Prohibited Areas: Some parts of the beach and reserves are always off-limits for dogs, so keep an eye on signage.
Off-Leash Zones: There are designated areas in town where dogs can run off-leash safely.
By respecting these rules, you help keep the beaches enjoyable and safe for everyone—humans, dogs, and wildlife alike!
Dog parks
Whangamata has the Park Avenue Reserve, also known as Park Ave Reserve - Dog Agility Park, located at 118A Avalon Place, which features off-leash play and agility equipment.
Have you paid your ramp fee?
If you're using the TCDC-maintained boat ramp to launch your boat, you'll need to pay a ramp fee (and trailer parking fee). This is not specific to the Whangamatā ramp - it includes all the TCDC-maintained ones in the Coromandel. If you haven't paid your fee, you could be liable for a fine.
Visit TCDC website for more information.
