Around Whangamatā

Otahu Estuary

As soon as you park at the end of Otahu Road and make your way across the reserve towards the Otahu Estuary, a sense of calm and reverence settles over you. This stunning piece of Whangamatā’s natural beauty is also a Urupā — a sacred Māori burial ground — so it’s important to move through the area with care and respect. Take your time to absorb the peaceful surroundings, enjoy the estuary views, and reflect on the cultural significance of this serene spot. And in summer, the area also offers a fantastic, safe swimming spot that’s perfect for kids, making it a wonderful mix of natural beauty, cultural significance, and family-friendly fun.

Humphrey the Elephant Seal

In the mid-1980s, Humphrey, an elephant seal, became a local legend in Whangamatā. His unexpected visits to the area, including sightings in the Uretara Stream and around the causeway, captivated both locals and visitors. Humphrey's presence was a rare and delightful occurrence, as elephant seals are typically found in subantarctic regions. His adventures sparked curiosity and affection, making him a cherished part of Whangamatā's maritime history.

Today, you can see a replica of Humphrey by the Hetherington Road Walkway, greeting visitors and locals alike as they make their way into town.

Site of First Store

In 1873, the bustling Whangamatā Goldfields attracted enterprising individuals, leading to the establishment of the town's first store. Located on a Pā site at Moana Point, the store was founded by Robert Henry Watt, who had relocated from Ellerslie with his family to seize opportunities in the burgeoning settlement. Goods for Watt's store were often transported by punt, drawn by horses, or via sledges and konaki, highlighting the resourcefulness required in those early days.

Today, a commemorative plaque marks the site of this historic store at Moana Point Reserve, serving as a reminder of Whangamatā's humble beginnings and the resilience of its early settlers .

Old Whangamatā Cemetery

At the end of Allen Drive is Whangamatā's first cemetery. It is now disused, but retains some of the first settlers into Whangamatā.
